The Port  of Skikda, past and present:
The harbour has played a predominant role since times long ago.  Carthaginian  comptoir, then a natural opening up for the harbour of OSTIE today ROME and which was the final destination of corn, and also of Sicily, Spain and probably the East.  During the colonial period, the first work was undertaken in 1861 and lead to the creation of a small harbour.  This demonstrates how long the history of the Port of Skikda is. The principal developments from 1891 to 1964 can be summarized as a prolongation of the large pier and a widening and the construction of earth platforms and new quays.  In 1969, it was decided that the port would be transformed into a mixed port with the inclusion of several oil jetties.  In 1981, a phase of adjustments was undertaken to increase the harbouring capacities of the mixed port.

Since then, at present, the performance of the port has never ceased thanks to modern equipment, and to notable efforts undertaken by the managers and the workers of the Company. Today, and in order to respond as well as possible the foreseeable increase in traffic and the spectacular rise in the amount of containers,

the Company plans to complete their studies aimed at developing a plan for the future of the port until the year 2015 and to begin initial work in creating a containers park.

The past year was exceptional with a significant growth in the movement of hydrocarbons, of general merchandise, and progress in other various goods, particularly containers.
The rapid development in the traffic of containers and the confirmation of the upward trend in the traffic of hydrocarbons requires fast adaptations to meet their specific needs.

With this intention, the Company included in its development plan a vast programme of modernization and adaptation of the maritime infrastructure and equipment, both naval as well as handling.

This program foresees the acquisition of three tug boats, of two high-speed motorboats and four mooring boats as well as acquisition, under the guise of the renewal and the modernization of its handling park, of replacement equipment and the additional equipment specialized in the handling of the containers and heavy parcels.

The implementation of a policy of total and continuous improvement remains the main concern of the General Management Office of the Company which continues in the effort to  install a system of quality management and ISO certification of the activities.
These actions constitute the proof of the know-how of the Company, its performance and development being based on constant action aimed at serving  the customer.
